Two Very Different Hardware Demands
Sim racing sits at both ends of the simulation hardware spectrum. The two titles covered here represent opposite cases.
iRacing is an online physics simulation where the CPU processes every car's contact patch, tyre deformation, and suspension geometry for every vehicle on track simultaneously. A locked, consistent 60fps with no hitches is worth more than an average of 120fps that drops under a safety car bunching or a wheel-to-wheel battle. CPU single-thread performance and RAM speed are the components that matter most.
Assetto Corsa Competizione runs on Unreal Engine 4 and is considerably more GPU-demanding than iRacing. Wet track reflections, dynamic weather, and the volume of light interaction in night racing push the GPU hard. VR doubles this load — ACC in a VR headset requires a GPU tier higher than the flat-screen recommendation.

Questions About Sim Racing PCs
iRacing is a physics-first simulation. The CPU calculates tyre contact patches, suspension loads, aero, and differential behaviour for every car on the grid in real time, for every physics step. In a multiclass race with 30 to 40 cars, this is a substantial CPU workload — and it is single-threaded for the core physics calculations. High single-core CPU speed and large cache memory reduce frame time variance. A build with a fast Ryzen 7 X3D and a mid-range GPU will deliver more consistent laps than one with a slower CPU and a high-end GPU.
ACC runs on Unreal Engine 4, which produces significantly higher visual fidelity than iRacing — volumetric weather, dynamic lighting, wet track reflections, and physically-based rendering. All of that complexity falls on the GPU. The CPU still needs to be capable, but the primary bottleneck at 1440p and above is GPU power and VRAM. Night racing and wet conditions in ACC are the most GPU-demanding scenarios in sim racing available on the consumer market.
VR is optional but widely used in sim racing — it provides genuine spatial awareness that flat screens cannot replicate, particularly for judging braking points and car positioning. In iRacing, VR is manageable at a mid-range build because the GPU is not the bottleneck. In ACC, VR approximately doubles the GPU workload. If you plan to run ACC in VR, size at least one GPU tier higher than the flat-screen recommendation. Tell Kevin which VR headset you own or plan to buy — resolution varies significantly between headsets and affects the GPU spec required.
Triple screens multiply the GPU rendering workload by approximately three — effectively running three simultaneous viewports. In iRacing, where the GPU is not the primary bottleneck, triple screens are achievable at a mid-range GPU tier. In ACC, triple screens at 1080p require a high-end GPU. At 1440p per screen, an enthusiast-tier GPU is the right target for ACC at full settings. The CPU spec for triple screen sim racing does not change significantly from the single-screen recommendation.
16GB DDR5 is sufficient for iRacing and ACC on a dedicated racing rig. If you run Discord, a spotter app, MoTeC, or a streaming overlay alongside the sim, 32GB provides the headroom to keep all processes comfortable. 32GB is recommended as standard on all Ginger6 simulation builds for this reason — the cost difference is small and the benefit of not having a background process compete with the physics engine is real.
